2003 has been a great year for hip-hop duo H20. After topping local radio charts and MTV Europe’s World Chart Express with their jazz-influenced hit, ‘It’s Wonderful?, they finally have a place among the top of the game. And now they bring you even more hotness in their debut album for Outrageous Records ‘Amanzi ‘Mtoti’, which means pure water in Zulu.
“It’s a continuation from the group’s name,” says 25-year-old Siphiwe Norten about the album title. “We’re quenching the thirsty and washing the dirty,” adds his other half, Menzi Dludla (24). The Meadowlands Soweto-born emcees clever lyricism, social commentary and tight hip-hop beats make them “the solution to those that are polluting the industry by producing songs with no message, ” says Menzi.

“All the songs on Amanzi ‘Mtoti express our views on different subjects,” says Dludla, who also penned the lyrics to the first single off the album, ‘All Natural’; a song he says is inspired by all women and all things feminine. According to him, those are independent women, who still show respect at home and understand the give-and-take nature of relationships. Apart from love you’ll also find politics, crime stories and of course township gossip on Amanzi ‘Mtoti. So, the album most definitely has range in terms of subject matter.
Outrageous Records CEO, Dzino believes that, ” What sets the album and the group apart from what’s out there is that they’re not imitating anybody, they’ re just being themselves. Everything they talk about they’ve lived it, there’s no fiction. It’s honesty.” In Siphiwe’s opinion, using mostly Zulu in their lyrics also makes them different, “We’ll use a few English words. We’re the first to do that in South Africa. That alone sets us apart.” And also, “many rappers rap about other emcees. We only have one song about other emcees (‘Isginqi’). We deal with kasi issues only,” adds Menzi.
“If I write it, I’ve experienced it,” says Siphiwe. “I remember living with my grandmother and my brothers and having no electricity,” he adds, referring to the songs ‘Enuff is Enuff’ and ‘Bekezela’. Soul Sister and stable mate, Pebbles laces this 40s-jazz-swing-inspired ‘Enuff’ with an unforgettable hook. ‘Enuff‘ and ‘Bekezela’ tell of poverty and hard times created by dysfunctional families and absent fathers. As Siphiwe puts it, “I’m warning our generation not to make the same mistakes. For example, I take full responsibility for my kids (Four-and-a-half year old Nathi and One year old Mbali), which my father never did. I’m always there.” Menzi’s fed-up rant on ‘Enuff‘ touches on the national lottery (robbery as far as he’s concerned) and “the many churches that are coming up.” He believes their “recruitment” methods are “blasphemous because they tell you if you’re poor or sick join our church. As far as I’m concerned it’s all a business.”
After exploring the darker side of hip-hop, the duo stretch their creativity by taking it to the next level with the experimental, rock-inspired, Santana-meets-Jimmy-Hendrix-club-banging party track, ‘Gish Gish’. There’s also a declaration of love on ‘Hip-Hop‘. But the Meadowlands boys aren’t looking for commitment, as they’ll have you know on ‘Love Is Too Much‘.
“Amanzi ‘Mtoti is just about H20 expressing themselves and reflecting on life in the townships,” says Dzino, “We tried to make it musically diverse, but without losing the whole essence of hip-hop. There are lots of live elements in the album and we experimented a little bit on songs like ‘Gish Gish‘, there’s even reggae beats.”
The legendary U.K. musician Jazzie B of Soul II Soul fame provides the reggae-influenced beat for the song ‘African’. On how that hook-up came about, Dzino says, ” Lee from YFM had some beats from Jazzie B (who was in the country at the end of 2002) and we heard the tracks. We asked Jazzie B if we could use the reggae track for the H20 album and he said yes.”
Amanzi ‘Mtoti features a dream team in its credit listings. Outrageous in-house producer, Battlekat – who also produced ‘It’s Wonderful‘ and the bulk of the Expressions hip hop compilation which features ‘It’s Wonderful?, is the man behind the majority of the beats on the album. Helio who was responsible for producing most of the 2002 album Rage: The Official Soundtrack For South African Street Culture returns, with wicked strings and catchy melodies on ‘Mahem Hem‘. And newcomer, JJ provides the hard drum kicks and the eerie, dark melody of ‘Wolves In Sheep’s Skin’. Skwatta Kamp’s Bozza adds his witty lyrics to ‘Dizzy Character’, a song about township loiterers. Other guests include, stable mate Zubz, X-Rate (who appeared on Maximum Sentense) and Nutty Tech from the 2rinity crew.
